The Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Top Position.

At first glance, this album could seem closer to a challenging academic challenge rather than the latest pop album by an artist whose last hit featured a global K-pop icon. Broken into 4 different sections and sung in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, often via the lens of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—soars upwards here, buoyed by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the work of contemporary pop stars seem quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend dry intellectual posturing feels almost miraculous, and complete praise going to the artist. While it's not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds and the present, its scale are much greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk more precarious. What truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is a core sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart apart, you still desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines brightly on the stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four minutes. Then, everything drops silent, and we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes in with cartoonish force. The track then segues to the wild single featuring racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor wish to know—where it will go to next."

Almost every track concludes at a totally distinct point than where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused work begins out moody and brooding, with menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is little surprise that it has become her first work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. A song performed primarily in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spirals upward. This feat is echoed by a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high artistry in an era of impending artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires patience to completely explore but never feels like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the guests at the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly creative visionary.
